Our Terrace

A quiet moment in the heart of the Mazarin

In Aix-en-Provence, a terrace is rarely just an extension of the dining room: it is often the very reason you linger at the table. At Le Petit Palais, located at 4 Rue Manuel in the Mazarin quarter, our terrace sits on a quiet street, only steps from the Cours Mirabeau and the Place des Quatre Dauphins. The atmosphere is calmer than on the busier tourist thoroughfares, with the honey-coloured stone facades of the old town as a backdrop.

The Mazarin remains one of the best-preserved neighbourhoods in Aix. Its south-facing streets catch bright sunshine or softer filtered light depending on the hour. This quieter setting, away from the noise of large commercial terraces, gives our street corner its character. Many regulars come here for the simple pleasure of an open-air lunch without leaving the city centre.

To understand why this area is so well suited to outdoor dining, have a look at our guide to the Mazarin quarter and its restaurants: history, fountains, mansions and places worth stopping at.

Bowls made for lunch on the terrace

The poke bowl is one of the meals best suited to outdoor dining. Fresh, colourful, rich in crunchy vegetables and balanced proteins, it is enjoyed at room temperature, with no time pressure, which makes it particularly pleasant when you want to settle down outside in the sun for a slightly longer break than a quick sandwich.

Our bowls are prepared every morning in our kitchen: warm seasoned rice, pearly quinoa, marinated salmon, tuna, grilled chicken or seasoned tofu depending on the version. Toppings change with the seasons: mango, edamame, avocado, red cabbage, grated carrots, cucumber, crispy onions, sesame seeds. All sauces are homemade, free from preservatives.

As for drinks, you will find fresh juices, speciality coffees and a few alcohol-free cocktails that pair nicely with an outdoor lunch. For the full list of signature bowls and sauce compositions, see our complete menu.

How We Use It

Several moments, one terrace

A restaurant terrace in central Aix is not only used for lunch. At Le Petit Palais, ours accompanies several moments of the day. At midday, between 11am and 3pm, we mostly welcome local workers, students from the nearby faculties and visitors looking for a lunch break that is both quick and well looked after. A bowl, a fresh juice, a coffee, and you can be back on your feet in forty minutes if needed.

At the end of the day, from 6pm, the terrace takes on a different mood. The light softens on the Mazarin stone, pedestrian traffic thins, and people settle in for dinner or a light aperitif with friends. It is one of the moments our regulars like best: an outdoor meal in a historic neighbourhood, without the crowd effect of the big tourist squares.

Between those two services, a coffee break is still possible during opening hours. We are not a traditional tea room, but many customers drop by simply for an espresso or a juice on the terrace, before or after a visit to the Musée Granet, the Hôtel de Caumont or the Cours Mirabeau. We are open Monday to Saturday; on Sundays, the restaurant is closed.

Eating Well Outdoors

A terrace for eating light without giving up pleasure

When you sit down on a terrace, you rarely want a heavy dish that leaves you sluggish for the afternoon. Le Petit Palais poke bowls are built on the opposite principle: a base of rice or quinoa, clean proteins (salmon, tuna, chicken, tofu), fresh vegetables and a carefully dosed sauce. The result is a complete meal that ticks the nutritional boxes without weighing you down, perfect for a weekday lunch or a Saturday break before heading back out into the centre.

This fits into our broader healthy cuisine in Aix-en-Provence: fresh products, transparent ingredients, and combinations designed to be both flavourful and balanced. Specific diets are well accommodated on the terrace or inside; several of our bowls suit guests looking for gluten-free options or vegetarian and vegan alternatives.

The average price of a complete meal on the terrace stays around 20 euros, with no supplement for outdoor service. Bowls are priced between 9 and 24 euros depending on the composition. Restaurant with terrace in Aix-en-Provence: our address on Rue Manuel

Aix-en-Provence is a city of terraces. The climate, the architecture, the Provençal way of life: everything pushes you to spend as much time as possible outdoors as soon as the weather allows. From March to October, sometimes earlier or later in the year, city-centre terraces fill up at lunchtime, for aperitifs and in the evening. Each neighbourhood has its own mood: the Cours Mirabeau and its large, lively tables, the Place des Cardeurs and its buzz, the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville and its constant flow. The Mazarin plays a different tune: more hushed, more residential, quieter.

Le Petit Palais, at 4 Rue Manuel, 13100 Aix-en-Provence, fits into that atmosphere. Our terrace opens onto a Mazarin street, close to the Place des Quatre Dauphins and a few minutes on foot from the Cours Mirabeau. Thanks to this location, you get a central address without the noise of the busiest arteries. It is a benefit many regulars come back for, especially for weekday lunches.

On the menu, our poke bowls come with formulas that fit a lunchtime rhythm. Among the most popular are bowls with marinated Scottish salmon, tuna versions, house-grilled chicken and vegetarian bowls with marinated tofu. Every bowl is built around a base (seasoned rice or quinoa), a protein, a choice of toppings and a house sauce. For fans of composed salads, several of our recipes can also be enjoyed as a salad bar in Aix-en-Provence, with the same fresh ingredients.

Le Petit Palais is rated 9.1 out of 10 on TheFork. To get your bearings in the neighbourhood before your visit, you can also check the practical information from the Aix-en-Provence Tourist Office. To book a table on the terrace or ask about availability, the easiest path is to call the restaurant directly; you can also visit our poke bowl page to learn more about our signature recipes before you arrive.
